Welcome to the organic farm of Windstrong
We are proud to be an organic farm in Port Colborne I have lived here since 1985. I belong to the Canadian Organic Growers. My goal is to be Certified Organic. All our livestock even
our dogs are raised naturally on species appropriate diets and live in natural to species
living conditions . Non of our animals are kept locked in a stall in solitary confinement . We
all depend on our farm our livestock which are horses and sheep depend on the alfalfa,
trefoil and timothy mix hay and pasture produced on the farm. The dogs and ourselves
depend on the organic chicken and organic eggs raised on the farm. We also have a well
with natural mineral water so they have constant fresh water .
Our horses live naturally with open shelters , large paddocks and pasture access, so they
have constant movement something the horses require for their circulatory system . I also use the same natural species appropriate approach with my sheep flock . My ewes
wean their lambs in the Fall and are then re -introduced to their selected rams to be bred in
time for the early spring grass . When on pasture I keep them moving using solar electric
fencing so they are not on the same pasture for long . I use Miniature Donkeys which I also
breed and my Portuguese Water Dogs which I also breed both in pairs to protect my lambs
and ewes from predators whether coyotes, stray domestic dogs or wolves. The sheep are
stress free and much more relaxed when the dogs are close by. I also have the sheep
surrounded with 5 foot non climb fence for even added protection from predators when on
pasture.
Our poultry are raised as day olds in large moveable nets. This helps protect the chicks from flying predators such as hawks. The dogs also help protect the laying hens which are free range and come and go freely from their shelter with perches and laying boxes in the barn. The dogs let me know by barking and getting my attention if any of my animals are in danger or if any stranger is on the entire property of 27 acres.
All our dogs sleep in the house and have access to the outside through dog doors and live happily in packs with their own hierchy and the older retired grand dams help train the younger dogs and keep them in line . When the dogs are on patrol their favourite job with the sheep they do so in pairs. All my dogs and donkeys are trained from puppies to be calm with the sheep and even the chickens.
Wind Strong is my herd name or Prefix it is registered with the Canadian Morgan Horse Association. We chose the name because there is usually a strong wind blowing from the south west from Lake Erie which we live close to . I would like to mention my life long love for horses I am a member of the Canadian Morgan Horse Association C.M.H.A. also the American Morgan Horse Association. A.M.H.A.
I have purchased horses from Canada and have also imported Registered Breeding Stock from the USA. which are now also registered with the Canadian Livestock Records. My horses have FlyHawk breeding and are mostly of the Government Lines. I like the Strong, Sound , People Loving and Working ability of these beautiful Morgans.
